Global Frameworks

BRSR vs. GRI vs. ISSB — Which Do I Need?

Three different frameworks, three different reasons to use them. Here's a simple decision guide for which one(s) actually apply to your Indian company.

TL;DR

BRSR is India's mandatory filing — if you're in scope, you have no choice. GRI is the most common voluntary global standard, useful when you want a widely recognized narrative report. ISSB (IFRS S1/S2) is the emerging global baseline that investors increasingly expect, especially if you have foreign institutional shareholders. Most Indian companies need BRSR first (if in scope), and add GRI or ISSB only when a specific audience — a global customer, investor, or exchange listing — actually asks for it.

Who this is for

Anyone facing a choice (or a request) involving more than one of these three names and unsure which actually matters for their situation.

Plain explanation

These three exist for different reasons, not as competing versions of the same thing:

  • BRSR exists because SEBI made it mandatory for the top 1,000 listed Indian companies. It's not a choice if you're in scope — it's a filing requirement, like a tax return.
  • GRI exists because the market wanted a common, detailed, narrative-heavy voluntary standard that any company, anywhere, can use to tell its sustainability story in a globally recognizable format. Nobody requires it by law in most cases — companies adopt it because customers, investors, or their own leadership want a globally comparable report.
  • ISSB (IFRS S1 and S2) exists because global investors wanted one consistent baseline for financially material sustainability information — closer to how financial accounting standards work. It's newer, narrower in scope than GRI (focused on what affects enterprise value), and rapidly becoming the reference point regulators around the world are converging toward.

India specifics

Start with BRSR, because it's the only one of the three you might be legally required to file. Use our BRSR scope checker to find out in under a minute.

Add GRI if: you want a comprehensive, narrative sustainability report that global customers, NGOs, or rating agencies recognize by name — GRI is the most widely cited standard worldwide, and BRSR was deliberately benchmarked against it, so much of your BRSR data carries over.

Add ISSB if: you have — or want — foreign institutional investors, a global stock exchange listing, or lenders who specifically ask for IFRS-aligned sustainability disclosure. BRSR is estimated to already be roughly 40% aligned with ISSB, so this isn't starting from zero either, but it's a narrower, more financially focused lens than GRI.

You will very likely never need all three in full parallel. Most Indian companies either (a) file BRSR because they must, and stop there, or (b) file BRSR and layer a GRI-aligned narrative report on top for external storytelling, or (c) file BRSR and produce ISSB-aligned disclosures specifically because global investors or an overseas listing requires it. Doing all three from scratch, independently, is rarely necessary — the underlying data mostly overlaps.

Worked example

Meridian Auto Components is a listed mid-cap, ranked inside the top 1,000, so BRSR is mandatory — no decision required. Its export business is growing, and a major European customer has started asking sustainability-focused procurement questions that sound like GRI-style narrative reporting, so Meridian's team builds a lightweight GRI-aligned summary using data it already collected for BRSR, rather than starting a separate data-collection exercise. It has no foreign listing and no institutional investor currently asking for ISSB-aligned disclosure, so it deliberately doesn't build that out yet — a decision it plans to revisit if that changes.

Checklist

  • Confirm BRSR applicability first — it's the only one of the three that can be legally mandatory for you.
  • Only add GRI or ISSB in response to an actual, specific request — not because the name sounds important.
  • Before starting a new framework, check how much of your existing BRSR data already covers it — the underlying data usually overlaps significantly.
  • Revisit this decision if your investor base, customer base, or listing status changes — the right framework mix isn't fixed forever.

What to do next

If you haven't confirmed your BRSR status yet, that's the right place to start.
